Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.

Our Programs

Circles of Understanding

"Circles of Understanding" are groups of 12-15 individuals who come together in deliberative, democratic dialogue, for two hours each week for three or more consecutive weeks to dialogue about important civic issues.

By participating in "Circles of Understanding", citizens gain a deeper understanding of their own and other's perspectives and concerns. They discover common ground and a greater desire and ability to work collaboratively in order to solve local problems as individuals, members of small groups, and members of large organizations in the community.

This community-wide program fosters new connections among community members that lead to new levels of community action. "Circles of Understanding" also creates new connections between citizens and government, both at an institutional level and among community members.

Many Young Voices

Many Young Voices is a program created to sustain an on-going teen dialogue about crossing boundaries and creating change across the community using face-to-face meetings.

Diverse dialogue groups of 10-15 young people meet to learn about one another from shared personal experiences and perspectives, as well as to learn how, as individuals, they can make a difference in their families, schools and community.

Several of the participating students created and now maintain a teen website, www.manyyoungvoices.org. This comprehensive youth program is implemented by teens with the guidance and support of adults. Both the face-to-face dialogue and the Website foster greater exposure, understanding and cooperation among our diverse teen population by providing a framework of inclusion across racial, ethnic, socio-economic and lifestyle lines.
