Brief History

Citizens of Camp, Morris, and Titus jointly approved the setting up of college district in the area in 1984. First class of the college was held in 1985. Basic objective of the college was to offer responsible and exemplary learning opportunities. A governing body of seven members, three from Titus and two each from Morris and Camp Counties was also set up.

Campus

Campus of the college covers an area of 375 acres. A unique feature of the campus is the uniform appearance of all buildings having earth tone brick and copper tone metal roofs. Service area covers Camp, Morris, Titus Counties, Avinger and Hughes springs, Como Pickton, Saltillo, Mount Vernon, Harmony, Ore city, Union Hall, Winnsboro, and Pewitt Consolidated independent school districts.

Programs Offered

Basic core courses leading to associate of arts or science degrees as well as courses leading to transfer to four year universities are offered in the college. In addition the college also offers applied science degrees and certificates enabling students to join the workforce instantly. Concurrent enrollments for high school juniors and seniors are the special offer.

Unique Offer

NTCC students can get bachelor’s degree from the Texas A&M University Texarkanain the disciplines like teacher education and criminal justice even while taking classes in the NTCC campus. In addition there is also agreement as may be seen in university directory for seamless transition of students that have completed Associate of Science Degree in Biomedical Science at NTCC to a Bachelor of Science Degree at Texas subject to NTCC students obtaining 3.6 GPA minimum.

Award Winning Honors Program and Sports Facilities

Northeast Texas Community College Students with high achievements can avail the benefits of NTCC initiated honors program initiated in 2007. Men’s baseball team called Eagles and women’s Lady Eagles softball team are well known. In addition the rodeo team of men and women compete across the country and ranked third in the 2007 nationals.

Student Services and Financial Aids

Northeast Texas Community College offers remedial services, academic and career counseling, PT cost defraying employment, and library facility for students. A dormitory can house 120 students. Additionally, core courses at the university level are often held in large lecture halls with hundreds of students. At community colleges, class sizes rarely exceed 30 students. So, paradoxically, community college students receive more individualized attention yet pay much less for that privilege.

Instructors at the community college level are required to hold a Master’s degree in their instructional area. Some have pointed to this as evidence that community colleges cannot provide the same quality of instruction as colleges and universities that employ professors with Doctoral degrees. However, very few of those professors actually teach the core courses that students take during their first two years of college. Additionally, community college instructors often have real-world employment experience that gives them a more practical perspective than university professors, who are immersed in the world of academia.

Transferring to a larger institution at the end of two years at community college is often easier than being admitted as a Freshman. Also, many states guarantee admission to their state colleges and universities to community college graduates who maintain a certain grade point average. Even prestigious Ivy League colleges like Harvard, Yale and Brown have accepted transfer students from community colleges.

The courses are quite affordable and provide an impressive level of training.

Community colleges play an important role in providing affordable education; yet they are considered inferior in comparison to University education. This consideration is quite further from the truth. In fact, a good number of nurses are students of community colleges and are very well trained in their jobs. The associate degree nursing program provided by community colleges are rigorous courses that provide very good clinical experience and comparable to that of the bachelor of nursing degree courses provided by Universities. However, if you possess nursing training from a community college, most hospitals will not consider you a candidate for any administrative nursing position, as this requires a Bachelor’s degree.

There are many advantages of learning at the community college levels. One biggest advantage is the fact that the teachers at the community college are dedicated to teaching. They are more approachable and helpful to the students. They are not simultaneously working on their own projects and usually devote all their time to teaching at the community college. Students are never considered as an interruption in the pursuit of their own agenda.

Community Colleges are a supportive system for those individuals who are going back to academics after a long gap or for those who may not have been getting top grades at high school. The teacher to student ratio is lower in community colleges hence, the teaching faculty can provide personalized attention to the students. This is a great advantage to the students who require extra coaching.

Students who complete the two-year degree program at community college are likely to complete their four-year degree. Research indicates that students who start at universities for four-year degrees usually drop out of the course mid way. A two-year community college degree will also help to increase the earning capability of the individual even if he does not complete the four-year degree course.

There are some disadvantages associated with community colleges that one should be aware of. Some universities do not accept transfer credits of courses completed at the community colleges. Ensure that you check out the courses required at the university that you plan to transfer to for further education. Another problem could be the availability of certain courses that you may want to do, or the limited number of courses on offer at the community college.
